Kīpu’u

The kīpu’u (or hīpu’u) method of lei making is a unique and traditional Hawaiian technique for creating lei without the use of cordage or needles. Knotting technique: Kīpu'u, which translates to a knot, bond, fastening; to tie a knot in Hawaiian, involves tying the stems of leaves or flowers together to form either an open ended or closed lei ‘ā’ī. Materials used: This method often utilizes plants with long, flexible stems. Lau kūkui (leaves of the kūkui tree) are often used due to the flexibility and length of their stems.
